Facebook Frenzy
For awhile it seemed harmless. I would get invitations to be someone’s friend on Facebook.
Then it started happening more frequently.
People I haven’t seen in awhile.
People I didn’t know.
Groups of people supporting Gavin Newsom for governor.
Women against Sarah Palin.
I wish I was as popular as the invitations made it seem!
I don’t want to be rude so I pretty much accept every invitation.
But this is all I did with Facebook.
I ignored the wall writings, the updates of people whereabouts and any other way you can use Facebook.
I mean, why is it important to know someone is walking their dog right now, or a friend is debating having chocolate before going to the dentist?
Then Facebook got more press, both positive and negative.
So I thought I would try it more.
I never had completed my profile so I thought I would. I added “single” to my profile.
How was I suppose to know every profile change I make is told to everyone I’m linked to as friends?
I got comments like didn’t we know this already or why are you telling us what we already know?
Give me a break, I thought I was being a good Facebook participant by completing my profile!
I was going to give up but went again to Facebook. As soon as I got on I was instant messaged. Apparently my presence will be immediately known to all my friends as well.
But we had a helpful conversation and it dawned on me how I could use Facebook.
Yes it would be great to find out what happened to someone and to get updates.
But I could also shamelessly promote my new book You’re Full of Shift as well.
My book contains 101+ stories of shifting a difficult situation to a positive opportunity.
It hopefully inspires everyone who reads it to look at their own difficult situations, personal or professional, and see them from a different perspective to help get opportunity.
For example, when I saw Facebook with a different perspective:
• I started welcoming invitations to have more friends rather then seeing it as something I was required to do
• I saw ways to market my business
• I got excited at the possibilities Facebook can provide
I’m not sure how else I’ll use Facebook, but I’ll be back!
