The Facebook Revolution

Facebook has invaded our lives.

Whether its’ connecting with old friends, people we met once, friends of friends, hearing people’s opinions on all the hot topics; facebook is a vehicle to do all this.

Further, companies have found business reasons to use facebook for marketing.

You know your staff is in facebook. But for what reasons? Is it business? Is it personal? How can you control it?

There have been stories of employees who have called in sick – only to update their facebook that day saying they are at the ballgame (I know, what were they thinking?! People not realizing how technology can get them into trouble. Which doesn’t make sense since technology has been getting a lot of people in trouble for years; anyone remember Oliver North and the Iran-Contra affair?)

But how much focus should you as a manager put into all this?

Focusing on something you can’t control can lead you to increased stress, decrease your productivity and get you nowhere.

Everyone does personal things at work – the longer you’re at work the more likely you’ll need to.

At least facebook is quieter then being on the phone.

There have always been inventions which enhance and detract from our productivity. They will always invade our work.

As managers and entrepreneurs with employees – where do we cross the line trying to control this?

If work is getting done, maybe the distraction of reading how their old high school friend had to have an emergency root canal put them in a better mood because they realized they’d rather be at work then having a root canal. Or if they are envying the root canal they’ll start to take a serious look at what and where they are spending countless hours of their life!

When you know what’s worth your attention:

  • You start to own your time rather then the other way around
  • Your focus is on solutions
  • You can be more proactive

And then you too will have time to be on facebook.
